Um DATAGRAMA é, citando o comentário Internet RC 1594, "uma entidade de dados, auto-contida, que possui suficiente informação para ser conduzida do computador de origem ao destino, sem depender nem das trocas anteriores entre aqueles pontos nem da rede transportadora".  O termo tem sido substituido em geral por pacote. DATAGRAMAS ou pacotes são unidades de mensagens tratadas pelo Protocolo Internet e transportadas por ela. Um DATAGRAMA ou pacote deve ser auto-contido, sem depender de trocas anteriores, porque não há qualquer conexão ou duração fixas entre dois pontos de comunicação, como ocorre por exemplo na maior parte das conversas telefônicas por voz. (Este tipo de protocolo é dito 'connectionless' - i.e., de uma rede 'sem conexão' fixa)

The term has been generally replaced by the term packet. DATAGRAMS or packets are the message units that the Internet Protocol deals with and that the Internet transports. A DATAGRAM or packet needs to be self-contained without reliance on earlier exchanges because there is no connection of fixed duration between the two communicating points as there is, for example, in most voice telephone conversations.
